Are you involved or just hanging out?

Often gaining new business depends on your involvement in an industry, association, group or community. So, how can you make the most of what is out there?

Companies want to spend resources (time and money) where they can get the most return. This means groups where they have common values, interests, goals and objectives and where they can be stimulated intellectually in order to improve themselves and their business.

These types of organizations usually involve trade associations, civic or not-for-profit groups, a task force, business or industry groups or even college alumni. But being a member of a group is just the start. You must attend meetings regularly and make a contribution. A contribution can be as speaker, sponsor, assist with a meeting, hosting a table, etc. This keeps your face and name in front of the group and positions you to be seen as a leader in the group. As a contributor to the group you are also in a position to get questions and hear about opportunities from the members.

So, how do you know if you are involved in the right groups to make the most of your resources and to position yourself for business development opportunities?

  • Does the group include clients of your company?
  • Does the group also include prospects for your company?
  • Will you gain intelligence from the group that will provide you with ideas and help you build a stronger business?
  • Do you enjoy the people in the group?

Being involved helps other companies get to know you and your business. Making people aware of what you do can create leads and referrals. People want to do business with people they know, and people they like. Building relationships is what it is all about and getting involved in your business community helps you do just that…personally and professionally.

So, are you involved or just hanging out? Get out there and have fun, build relationships and grow your business…the only thing holding you back, is you!
