Family-owned businesses could get relief from burdensome accounting standard

A proposed change in accounting standards for leases is good news for family-owned businesses and should help them save time and money.

The bottom line on the proposal is this: Family-owned businesses would no longer be subject to accounting rules designed to address issues created by "off balance sheet" entities like those that surfaced in the Enron mess 10 years ago, but which had unintended consequences.
