The Government Accountability Office (GAO) says the IRS could further leverage its system for detecting and preventing the issuance of invalid tax refunds.

In the report, the GAO stated the agency’s pre-refund Return Review Program (RRP) has prevented the issuance of approximately $6.5 billion but could take advantage of “other opportunities” to detect fraud. For example, the IRS could use the RRP’s capabilities to improve other tax enforcement activities.
